Macho Man 1952-2011

WWF, WCW, and TNA wrestler "Macho Man" Randy Savage, 6'2", 237#, died this morning of a heart attack while driving in Florida.  He was 58 years old.  He was a colorful figure always, the campy epitome of all things masculine,  an implicit answer to Gorgeous George before him (whose entrance theme "Pomp and Circumstance" Randy borrowed, and who had epitomized effeminate vanity in the '40s and '50s).  Savage, born Randall Poffo, styled himself as half jungle man, half cowboy.  Among the most memorable storylines of Randy's career were his feuds with Ric Flair, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, and Hulk Hogan and his in-ring "wedding" to Miss Elizabeth (to whom he was already married in real life--she died eight years ago).

Sincere condolences to Poffo's family, friends, and fans.

And thank you to Jason for informing me of the Macho Man's death.

  1. This is very sad news and the end of an era for me personally. Randy Savage was one of my first pro wrestling crushes. A photo of him in a 1979 Wrestling Revue (I still have it somewhere and if I find it, will scan it and pass along to you if you'd like) has him trapped in Raymond Rougeau's abdominal stretch. Very hot. One of my 'coming out' favorite photos. RIP Randy.
