Fans of Jake Jenkins and of the rough stuff may want to note that JJ is making his amateur MMA debut this Saturday evening, November 19th, at the Hampton University Convocation Center, Hampton, Virginia. He will be competing in the 155-pound weight class.  Epic Fight Management is sponsoring the event. I wish him all the luck in the world on the occasion of this new venture.

  2. To Darien, I will not be there, but I hear that audio live feed of the event will be available through The Four Ounce Radio Show at http://www.thefourounceradioshow.net. I have not heard anything about what kind of (if any) visual coverage the bout will receive. In any event, I hope Jake makes good.

  3. UPDATE: Jenkins lost to Dusty Shaw by unanimous decision in the first bout of the evening. Jenkins fought well, delivering several strong elbow blows and kicks, but Shaw forced him to fight from the bottom up for most of the 15-minute match. Jenkins' best hope in the final round was a knockout punch, which did not happen. Still, JJ made a brave and vigorous show in his debut, and I am sure we all wish him the best.

  6. On the same night, Jake Jenkins was doing MMA, Jonny Firestorm was in a pro ring doing a show, Lon Dumont was on stage competing in a bodybuilding contest (he came in 2nd) and Chace LaChance was arm-wrestling professionally. the BG boys keep busy! And yeah, Jake Jenkins and Joah Bindao get it on in the next BG set of matches.

  9. Other BGE guys outside BGE: Rio Garza competed in a Musclemania physique contest last weekend. He came in fourth, which is already impressive for a national competion. But what was really notable was four of the five judges gave him the maximum score in most categories, the fifth gave him a single score that was lower than the next 30 competitors. So, quite frankly, but for that score, he might have won.

And Z-man was on VH-1 recently. The show was about women with terrible personalities learning how to date, and Z-man was one of the guys trotted out as the sort of man they could get if they were less rotten (I'm not totally opposed to reality television, but sometimes I pass by one flipping through the channels and can't help thinking, "Seriously?"). And that's on top of both Z-man and Garza appearing in dozens of magazines from Undergear to EMO to Instinct and more websites than I can count on a regular basis.

Anyway, the point is it's kinda fun now and then to stumble across someone we "know" in a wrestling context outside in the real world. While it doesn't necessarily make a match entertaining by itself, it does add something. Hell, I remember being a teenager standing at that intersection of sex and violence that's so fundamental to wrestling and fantasizing about what would happen if the guys from the Undergear catalog that used to show up in the mailbox stepped into the ring on WCW Saturday Night. I know most gay wrestling fans hate that sort of stuff, so maybe it's just me.
