Spunk

Check out this Australian Championship match on the BangTV channel at YouTube for a look at promising rookie Luke Knight stripping his former tag partner The Exclusive of the belt. Luke started training in September of 2011 in Sydney. He's now completing training with Dory Funk in the USA. Eleven days ago he auditioned for WWE. The WWE scout told him that he still needs work on promos and body size (pretty much a summary of WWE in toto, as far as I'm concerned). No fan of promos anyway, I think Luke looks fine, as is--a bit of a cross between swimmer Michael Phelps and 1990s WCW babyface Billy Kidman. The Skull Island scout's only advice is to take a tip from the Funk brothers and work on body-to-body holds and sweat a whole lot more.

  1. He looks more than fine to me, too. And promos as a skill set? Really?

I've been in the hospital since Christmas which has given me access to cable and a lot of mostly WWE wrestling. I now remember why I haven't missed TV wrestling much.

There's still good wrestling and promising matches (which too often fall short of the promise), but the promos and the jibber-jabber is waste of time. I want to see WRESTLING, not a cross between Jerry Springer and One Life to Live. In the time given to that nonsense they could fit in at least 2-3 matches.

There's one TNA program and one Ohio-based Indy show per week and neither is perfect, but, over all, they're better than WWE.

WWE's near monopoly and influence beyond its franchise is not healthy. Sadly, most current fans are happy with this status quo. They've never known and can't imagine anything better.

As late as the '80s, in this part of Ohio I could see show from the Northeast, the South, Texas, and even Canada, on broadcast TV. Each had its own style and unique roster. Today TV is much more
    homogenized.

IMO, the best hope for pro wrestling today is on-line vids. I've seen variety and diversity there, from Germany, UK, Japan, Norway, Ireland, ANZAC, India, Finland, Russia, and many US regional and indie organizations. Even though some of these are WWE influenced, they still mostly have their own character.

If I had the resources and connections I'd do a TV program based on the best of Internet wrestling.

    1. We agree on the promos. If they must be, then a modicum of wit would be nice. But I'm afraid their only purpose is to pad shows, offering viewers minimal wrestling while guaranteeing maximal exposure to advertisements--of WWE products and sponsors. We agree on homogenization, too--WWE has a lot of wattage but no tone--as I've said before it's "wrestling" for people who hate wrestling.

Your TV show idea sounds good to me. I think you should shoot for a blog or vlog, though. I'd follow it!

Get well, Almatolmen, and get yourself on home from the hospital!

    2. Thanks, Joe. Actually, for most of the time I've been mostly healthy. But I had surgery on an ingrown hair that abcessed on my right shoulder. The dressing needs changing twice a day and it's impossible to do myself and there's no one who could do it for me at home. So, I'm in a skilled nursing center until my wound is healed.

As for the vlog, my resources, electronic and financial are limited and this medical mess hasn't helped. Money I'd hoped to use to support me for a few years had to be spent down to meet Medicaid eligibility. Now I'm good for a year or so. Even this iPad account has limited viability.

But anyone who wants to take up the idea is welcome to it. It'd be kind to give me credit for the concept, however.

I think I sent you a listing of my YouTube favorites. That'd be a place to start for anyone who wants it, though I've added to it since then.

  2. Looked at the match. Pretty good. !BANG! has other nice ones on YT.

    Rant cont'd:

What marketing genius decided to break the rhythm and flow of matches with commercial breaks? Or brilliant director moved the camera from ring action to the announcers (!) or "companions" at crucial moments?

And what happened to the former staple of 2/3 falls? And one innovation I liked, the TNA hexagonal ring?

  3. I tried to paste that list here. It didn't work. Sigh!

  4. BTW, I added 42 matches to my favorites lists. The total is now 87.
