On Fucking Fire

Eli Black vs Coleman Free, Match 525 (UCW)

Coleman seems to realize what he's up against. The guy's pretty but he's smart too. Evidently he's been studying Eli's previous fights. It takes Eli over a minute to get a good grip on the guy. At last he wraps the longhair in a bear hug, but the slow grind was never Black's preferred style, so he drops the hug and starts pummeling the guy with a succession of rapid-fire strokes. Still Eli is as silent as the grave. Desperate to escape, Coleman scratches Eli across the eyes (and not for the only time). Though effective in the short term, this tactic is something Free is going to regret.

With Black temporarily sightless, Free uses his advantage to do some pummeling of his own. He goes for a pin fall, but Eli doesn't give him even half a count before thrusting loose. Coleman proceeds to one of my favorite punishments, the side headlock, using the hold to slap Eli to the mat and exert an even tighter lock on the head and neck. Eli reverses, but quickly Coleman regains control.

Even at its cleanest, it's a mean, violent fight. The battlers are better matched than I would have imagined, and when Eli gets Coleman in an extended choke, the struggle is as primal as I've ever seen. Once he has a feel for Coleman's soft spots, he targets them with a predator's exactitude. Many of his attacks look like the video has been sped up, but, no, it's all Eli's sure-handedness and finesse, more often than not equaled by Coleman's tenacity.

The ferocity mounts as the 30-minute match progresses. Though few words are spoken, the soundtrack is hardly silent. Grunts, blows, moans, and howls merge into an intensifying percussive roar. We get silence only after the most grueling arm-bar tap-out in UCW history. For the second time this month, UCW knocks my socks off and sets them on fire.

  1. There was a palpable anger in this match. Although I love when Eli's personality comes out to play, this match was all business by both men. No banter, no playfulness. Just an "I'm going to hurt you" mantra adhered to by both men. Even the winner storms off like he's pissed at the end. I wonder if the two had words before the match. Still, brutal fun to watch.

  2. Want to wrestle Eli Black. He's one of my favorites on the mat and a cocky wrestler with plenty of attitude, which I like in an opponent. Coleman Free looked dam hot in this match. I like these intense matches - not just aimless rolling around, but two young muscle studs going at it to win at all costs.
