Patrick Donovan vs Tyrell Tomsen, Wrestler Spotlight: Patrick Donovan (BG East)

My all-time favorite Patrick Donovan match is in BG East's Wrestlefest 2, with sweaty Brad Rochelle kicking his candy ass all around the ring and then serving the leftovers up for the boisterous band of wrestlers watching at ringside. (It's my favorite Rochelle match, too.) Usually, though, I prefer Donovan out of the ring and on top. For instance, I love the sensual and laconic way he dominates and contains Steven Thomas in Gazebo Grapplers 11, a benchmark in my concept of erotic wrestling. A tie or a close third with GG11  is this Wrestler Spotlight match against Tyrell Tomsen.

Two Tyrell Tomsen matches tie for my all-time favorite: his Gazebo Grapplers 10  fight against the buoyant Gil Barrios and his comeuppance-stoked double-header against Z-Man and Dev Michaels in Wrestle Revenge. Besides owning one of  the most gorgeous physiques in the history of underground wrestling (an incomparably witty copy writer for BGE describes it as "what boulders would look like if Renaissance sculptors had invented boulders"), Tyrell stands out because of his pro-style magnetism and the éclat of his body slams (given and taken). He exudes contempt and arrogance not just when he's beating the biscuits out of a guy but also when somebody's beating the biscuits out of him.

Contempt  and arrogance  apply to Tomsen and Donovan equally, and the collision of egos in their match together is what makes the contest so very appetizing. Initially both are more caught up with their mirror reflections than with each other. If egotism is the driving force of this battle, lust is what raises and accelerates it beyond your meat-and-potatoes mat attack. As the fight climbs in intensity, the long tights peel off to reveal dance thongs, scarlet for Donovan and leopard print for Tomsen. Nuts get grabbed, twisted, and thrust up hard against other nuts as the erotic steam generated by these grapplers fogs my eyeglasses. The sexual component is reinforced later when the match's victor drags his conquest away from the camera's gaze for some finishing moves in private.

Strength vs experience is the fight's theme, if a theme is needed. Tomsen boasts the muscle power, but Donovan has the practical knowhow. Donovan has 27 other BGE releases, some against old-school hard drivers like Kid Vicious and Dick the Prick, as well as grappling experience at the now defunct NHB-Battle. Tomsen has less than half that experience, but 25 extra pounds of solid muscle in his favor. He's faced his share of tough competition over the years, too, but there's no question that Donovan has a stronger record of wins. The match supplies most of my nutritional needs - implicit drama, solid mat-grappling creds, strongly contrasting protagonists with equally high self-esteem, and fighters who are as tough as they are hot.
