Cliff Notes

Cliff Conlin vs Mike Pope, Shooters 1 (BG Enterprise)

BG Enterprise is now selling its classics from the '80s and '90s as part of its members-only site with video downloads for sale even for non-members - here. This may not be of interest to young fans - though it damn well ought to be - it is great big news for me. The site is set up much like Wrestler4Hire, and while the video quality is not state of the art by current standards, the underground scene from 1984 to 1994 was a high point for wrestling from the heart, a true golden era. No small part of the credit goes to grapplers like Cliff Conlin, here in Shooters 1  against Mike Pope.

This roughhouse brawl is the second on the video, which runs for close to two hours, seven bouts altogether. I like this one best because I like Conlin and Pope, and against each other they unleash the full force of their competitive spirit. This is mat wrestling all the way, even though it's set in a ring. The ropes are barely touched, but anything Cliff does is dependably a balls-to-the-wall fight. The guy always looked like a proper roughneck - hair, sneer, shoulders, back, butt, and legs - and in this one  Cliff adds insult to injury in the end by tossing a vanquished Mike out of the ring and onto the floor.

  1. I like both guys and used to enjoy watching their matches. Especially Cliff Conlin is hot when he suffers.

  2. Great post Joe. I wish I could have seen these guys when they were in their prime. As a kid I definitely would have had a poster of Mike Pope up on my wall (or at least under my matress).

  3. I just fell in love with Cliff Conlin. Will check and watch all the matches you've cited. Happy that he has a lot in can-am site. There are even episodes wherein its all his matches. Did he wrestle in other promotions?

    1. Welcome to the club! Most of Cliff is at BG Enterprise and Can-Am Wrestling. There's a match with Kid Leopard at BG East - I can't remember whether this one is available elsewhere, too.

  4. Mike Pope got bigger and bigger and really excelled at his fighting skills. Especially liked when he went up against Antonio Silva. Two handsome men with outstanding physiques go at it to the bitter end.

    1. Mike Pope vs Antonio Silva? Where can this be found?

    2. Possibly thru the BG east web, but might prove difficult as most sites are showcasing scrawny little Gen. X wrestlers in Baggy shorts and tats.
