"This Time He's Fucking Mine!"

Iceman18 vs Punk, Mat Wars 83 (Thunder's Arena)

Since his debut late last summer, Iceman18 has shown a lot of fight potential in matches that might otherwise be lightweight or hackneyed. I have a hunch that he has an itch for more substantive acts of aggression, though currently constrained by aspects of Thunder's house style, its studied amateurism and flippancy to name two. For me, this hint of an itch has been plenty enough reason to keep watching him. I love the way he scales Mack's towering body in Vegas Battles 29. He succeeds in toppling the giant and follows through with some not-bad holds, too. He also impresses me in his dreamlike splash-bash match with Steel, released as part two of CyberMonday 2017. Iceman commits 100% to the contest, though it's probably meant as fluff. I enjoy the Arena's frolicking atmosphere, but one day I'd like to see Iceman cut loose on somebody UCW style or show somebody some MuscleBoy-style rough love.

After the first five minutes of zingers and poses, Mat Wars 83  begins to live up to the series' name. The action is aggressive and often significant. Iceman and Punk rev each other up. Iceman shows a penchant for strongman tactics such as heaving the burlier wrestler up onto his shoulders. He doesn't look like he's just horsing around as he cracks the new guy over his knee. In turn, Punk sells the pain like a man who appreciates the value of macho-man suffering. After a particularly strenuous camel clutch, he seems unable even to get back on his feet. Yet Punk is largely unfazed by Iceman's headscissors, a situation Iceman takes as a direct challenge, doubling down with the hold several more times, each time acquiring a new layer of sweat. Iceman's self-confidence and determination make the contest more compelling than it might have been.

For my tastes, Iceman is the best-looking of Thunder's recent hires, and I believe in him as a wrestler too. If he can hold on to his commitment to earnest, hard-driving mat drama and acquire more of Marco's grappling know-how, I could easily get obsessed with the guy.

  1. Want to wrestle Iceman anytime on the mats or in the ring - submission grappling would be awesome.
