Fuck Him Up!

Whether a real-life quarrel or a sadistic fiction, the feud between Erik and Chase, which erupted to the surface (and onto video) last spring, is a good thing for UCW ... and me. Based on last week's release, Match 630, the seething enmity between these two is a welcome throwback to the company's raw and batshit past and a blueprint for the company's future: Take regular good-looking guys who like to play rough, who get off on both sides of the pain pendulum, and set them loose on each other in whatever kind of fight they have a hankering for. In 630 we get ball-squishing, muscle-punching, eye-gouging, and biting ... for starters. Later, BodySlam's walking-stick gets pulled into the fray and weaponized.

Not a second of this match looks anything less than perilous, as all good pro-style matches (ring or no ring) should be. Every new assault is potentially humiliating or crippling, and Chase and Erik are so capable of throwing themselves 100 percent into the brawl that not a second passes without raising the video's intensity and heat. Given what the two are embarking on, the dialogue at the beginning is surprisingly civil - on the surface anyway. Chase praises the Viking's earlier match while at the same time antsily shifting his weight from one foot to foot, clearly itching to get his hands on all that Norseman muscle. The bell no sooner sounds than the two throw themselves upon each other like Komodo dragons in a turf war - or, scarier, eighth-grade girls in a catfight during lunch hour.

The advantage ping-pongs between Erik and Chase up to the last four minutes, which is pure animal retribution one party delivers upon the hide of the other party. The level of ferocity on display in Match 630 is a new high for UCW. There's nothing jokey, cute, or boyish about any of this - a characteristic no less true of its first fevered minute than of its last. For the past couple of years, the UCW matches that were NOT history in the making are countable on the fingers of both hands. I credit BodySlam, Axel, and the company's brightest daredevils, including Chase and the Viking, for these miracle years.

  1. Like to wrestle Erik the Viking in a submission grappling match.
