Konosuke Takeshita vs Yuki Ueno, King of DDT Tournament 2019 (DDT)

You don't find ring wrestling more brutal or more elegant than in Japan. And it's hard to find awesomer Japanese wrestlers than Konosuke Takeshita and Yuki Ueno in this match from April 29th. Though both are the same age (23) and hail from the same city (Osaka), Takeshita has been on the wrestling world's radar longer than Ueno. I blogged about him in 2016 and 2018. Ueno, however, is catching on fast, but this is the first mention of him in these pages. Bruno at Beefcakes of Wrestling posted drool-worthy photos of Ueno this past January.

This is the last of the first round matches of the tournament, and it dazzles with a combination of tricky high-flying (Ueno) and strong-style clobbering (Takeshita). What I said about timing in Tuesday's post applies here as well. The speed with which these attacks occur - and I swear I did not speed up any of the GIFs - makes my heart leap up into my throat. This is the kind of greatness that happens only when both combatants are at the top of their game. As it turns out, the winner of this 20-minute match went on to win the King of DDT finals last Sunday in Tokyo.
