Gabe Heel

Gabe Steel vs El Fuego, Match 654 (UCW)

This nugget of gold doesn't go the way I thought it would. At first, I thought it would go along the lines of big dude squashes little dude through superior muscle and poundage. Another possibility was little dude handily trounces big dude through speed and technical know-how. Where it actually goes is every which way. The give and take is so speedy that there's no telling the outcome until it's right there breathing down the back of your neck.

Gabe and Fuego may well represent the future of UCW, Gabe bringing needed heft to the company's roster, Fuego combining pugnacity and showmanship. I'm especially a fan of El Fuego, whose energy I like and whose mask begs to be unlaced and stripped off, exposing the wrestler for who he really is. Up till now the closest we have come to seeing Fuego's face was at the end of Fuego vs Eli Black two months ago. Fuego's slim but hotly built torso is expressive enough that one can be satisfied not knowing what sort of face hides behind the mask.

Gabe launches the fight by kicking Fuego in the gut when Fuego offers a sportsmanlike handshake. It's not an unusual opener for a UCW match except for its shocking suddenness. It declares Gabe's character as the heel, but less than a minute later Fuego makes clear that he is as capable as Gabe of administering pain, and his means are far more intricate and stinging. Like the beginning, the ending comes suddenly and pitilessly.

  1. If memory serves, Joe, the near unmasking comes at the end of El Fuego's epic match against Eli, not his fight with Austin. Of course, in both of those matches the torsos and the torture had me so distracted that I could be wrong...l
