Austin Tyler vs Nick Flex, Catalog 17 - The Muscle Boys Call the Shots (MuscleBoy Wrestling)

After their mat room fight from 2018, a ring battle between Nick Flex and Austin Tyler was inevitable. Both have the sturdy and well-hewn physiques the squared circle favors. Added to that, there's Catalog 17's  titillating disclosure that Nick and Austin "do NOT like each other and that isn't a work, it's REAL" - words - I should be ashamed to admit - that perk my dick right up.

The wrestlers' distaste for each other does not, however, entirely benefit the performance. The match is spectacular in its parts, but it does not hold together dramatically, a situation that may, in fact, be due to clashes in temperament and the wrestlers' divided concepts of what a ring match should accomplish. Often the pacing is off despite the pyrotechnic brilliance of the individual performances. The rage and bad blood should tie all the assaults and holds together as theater. Instead, the match is spotty - at times electrifying, yet with the action never quite adding up in a way that would justify the payoff.

The electrifying parts deserve attention, though. Particularly strong is Austin's backward crawl up the turnbuckle, using a head scissors to choke Nick on the top rope (second GIF below). Not only is the attack inventive and splendidly vicious but also hot as holy fuck, with Flex's stunned grimace pressed against Tyler's crotch between massive granite thighs. I wish the hold lasted longer, the better to savor it, but it is already indelibly fixed in my imagination to nourish my fantasies later.

Also, Flex's one-two-three in the fourth GIF above is the most dynamic five seconds in the match, superior even to the finisher (not shown). Nick is a slugger, a role he performs stunningly throughout the battle, with Austin selling the hell out of each blow and, given the opportunity, fighting fire with fire. Taken by themselves, out of context of the match as a whole, these assaults are as close to perfection as any these fighters have previously executed.

Flex and Tyler have never looked better. Their physiques define what wrestlers' bodies should be, and their savage offensives, though loosely attached to a sense of cumulative effect, are straightforward and readily felt in the moment. Low blows are not overworked or overlooked. These fighters prefer rowdy and straightforward brawling, and in its best moments this battle is as hearty and mean as any I have seen.
