Fun with Matt and Tyson
Matt vs Tyson the Hammer, Match 655 (UCW)
Title-holder Tyson wants a match. All Bodyslam has for him is Matt, a UCW greenhorn whose only other match was a more or less college-style contest against Axel. Not bad. The ink's not dry on his contract, and already Matt is squaring off against the company's top talent. He's either very lucky or very unlucky to face such challenges so early in his underground career. The catch is that it's a no-ref, no-title contest. These guys are getting in the ring strictly for the fun of it. Supposedly.
I'm not sure Tyson knows what he's getting into. Matt's built tough, and last month he and Axel tore into each like their lives depended on it. The guy impressed me and left Axel winded and gasping. So maybe "fun" is not the right word for a battle against Matt, who may not yet know the ropes but has a natural instinct for brawling. He seems like a nice guy, all in all, but this dude doesn't pussyfoot around.
Nevertheless, there's a reason Tyson is the champ. He has successfully defended his title against worthy adversaries, including Derrick Cole, Austin Tyler, and Axel, A-Listers all. His style is less brutish and more technical than that of most of his opponents, but then you have to take into consideration that, for Tyson, biting is a technique. This is UCW after all, not the Olympics. Taking on a potential dark horse like Matt shows guts - and as he finds out, Matt does not break easily.
Matt looks a little uncomfortable at first, perhaps feeling out of place in the UCW squared circle, but he proves his mettle in an opening test of strength. The 35-minute match consists of a lot of stuff I like - suplexes, reverse bear hugs, schoolboy pins, gut punches, forearm smashes, chin clutches, side headlocks, crotch grabs, and surprising reversals, as well as a top favorite, chokes. By a third of the way through, it's clear the newcomer knows a thing or two about pro-style rasslin' and mouthing off. In a struggle, his animal grunts can be felt on the back of the scrotum.
The match ends violently with a 35-second choke-out (and virtual butt-fuck) that seems to last forever, as the recipient struggles valiantly but at last succumbs, dropping to the mat like a rock. This is a fight nobody should miss. It will be good for several viewings at my house.
