Jake Mason vs Matt Miller, All American Clash (88Wrestling)

The bodies are sexy. Matt is beefy and tan, and he sweats like a lawn sprinkler. Jake has fine detail in his musculature and a face made for glowering at an opponent. They are close in height - both statuesque at around 6 feet - and weight (with a 15-pound difference). The guys are handsome - and increasingly wet. The match is a mixed bag, however. Still, the arrival of fresh muscle is always an event.

This is both men's second match at 88, having debuted against well-trained vets (Matt against Ethan Andrews, Jake against Zack Johnathan). It will be interesting to watch these young wrestlers develop their ring psychology - i.e. performance style - in matches to come. Past wrestlers have received their ring training in front of the camera, transforming themselves from fledglings to superstars right before our eyes - Zack and Ethan, for two examples.

I get the sense that, right now, Jake and Matt are a little camera shy, preoccupied with choreography they haven't mastered yet. I would have preferred they had grappled, which would give them both something to draw their minds away from the camera and perhaps ground them in the basics of the sport. Handsome young men wrestling for reals are compelling even when they aren't particularly good at it. Pro wrestling, like the flying trapeze and stand-up comedy, is another thing entirely.

  1. I bought this immediately, and agree the only thing I’d recommend is to let them grapple more and get a better feel of the ring so moves don’t come across as a bit awkward. The scripting might read well, but these guys need a few more stripes to make the script into a better reality. Still, they are both great to watch and there are more really good moments than bad ones. They also could work on their trash talk - it’ll come more with confidence in the ring. I’m glad I got it!
