Derrick Cole vs Chase Michaels, Match 672 - Best of 5 Submissions (UCW)
I look at the names of the contenders in Match 672, and I think, "This will be sweet." Both are good on the mat. I like Chase Michaels for the ice water running through his veins. I like Derrick Cole for his fiery intensity. Putting these two together again was smart. So was making this a best-of-5-submissions match - more room for reckless brawling and lightning strikes of undiluted pain. This is not Chase and Derrick's first time fighting each other. They fought twice in 2016, June and October, back in the old cinder-block space.
I have a theory antagonists have better fights with guys they have fought before. They improve with use, like Chinese teapots. Familiarity with one's opponent's strengths and weaknesses makes for an interesting battle. It's not as repetitious as you might think. A wrestler is less likely to play it safe the second or third time with the same opponent. When you don't know the other guy, you don't know how hard you can push him. With a tried-and-true enemy, you raise the ante a notch or two each time.
Right off the bat, Chase goes after Derrick with the kind of fury it takes strangers half a match to warm up to. Cole absorbs a few punches, then fires right back, big smile on his face like all along he was hoping Michaels would step over the line. Chase likes to hurt his guys with subtle twists of cartilage. Derrick likes to beat his guys black and blue. Similar ends, different aesthetics - not to say that Derrick can't bend a finger or that Chase can't head-butt, clearly such is not the case, as this match proves.
This is damn good submission fighting. Both men, in their own sick ways, are having a ball. Me, too.
