Revenge of the Nerd

Ethan Andrews vs Zack Johnathan, Revenge of the Nerd (88Wrestling)

I'm on Zack's side on this one. Nobody but a bag-boy at the Mayberry A&P needs to wear a bow tie on a white short-sleeve shirt. And nobody over 14 should play with plastic lightsabers*. Good-natured Ethan parodies himself in this one (in life he is a Doctor Who fan - for all I know, he also owns a pocket protector and several sweater vests), and BMOC Zack loses his shit over Andrews's geeky attire. It doesn't take a minute before Ethan climbs into the ring, shedding his glasses and shirt to square off against the agelessly dashing bully.

If you can't tell where this match is heading (after reading the title or having seen Ethan's or Zack's previous matches), you don't deserve a spoiler alert. The wrestling is fine, even if predictable. Both guys know their stuff and are born crowd-pleasers. I suspect both share many of the same fans. I'm surprised it's taken 88 this long to put them in the ring together (they faced off five times at Rock Hard Wrestling, so they're not exactly strangers to each other).

Zack and Ethan have managed to retain a shy-boy's self-consciousness in front of the camera over more than a decade of experience in underground wrestling. It's endearing and, I suspect, genuine. The "revenge" portion of the video sees both rising above their camera-shyness and loosing a hailstorm of hurts on each other. So if the early "cutes" are too much for a viewer, he can always fast-forward to Round 2 for some heart-racing huffing and puffing.

* If your response is that nobody over 60 should be blogging about wrestling - well, you may have a point there!

  1. Like we needed ANOTHER Zack vs Ethan match these guys are old news. Ethan's grin and tone when he acts is so offputting it comes off as chauvinistic. Just because he has experience in combat sports he thinks he knows everything about wrestling.

    1. Thank you for leaving a message. Your opinion is welcome and appreciated, but try to criticize constructively - or with a touch of humor. Axel's a buddy.

    2. Michael here, Ethan Axel is a very good Pro Wrestler, train at my school and I have seen him bring audiences to their feet at my indy shows. The real problem is the way internet companies shoot, mine included, many matches in one day can be tiring for all performers. Last matches of the day can seemed forced. But I enjoyed this one myself.
