Morning to Night
Kenny Starr vs Nino Leone, Backyard Brawls 12 (BG East)
Both matches in Backyard Brawls 12 involve somebody tutoring somebody else in the art and science of wrestling, BG East style. As always, the teacher learns more than the student - in this case, because the presumed rookies know a lot more about wrestling than they let on.
From the beginning, Kenny Starr presents himself as not just a novice but a bit of a goof, prancing with a dry slice of toast and chanting "breakfast-time" in a singsong voice. Nino Leone is having none of it, saying they need to focus on working on their "basic skills" and swatting the toast from Kenny's fingers. Starr puts a lot of heart into wrestling, but at first it does seem that Leone has a better grasp (so to speak) of holds. For most of the 25-minute match, the give and take is fairly steady, yet exuberant Kenny gradually puts his smug opponent in his place.
The second match takes place at dusk, the tree frogs sounding their mating calls in the background. Ash DeLeon assumes the dominant role, ordering new hire Cai Li to kneel before him so he can demonstrate the sleeper hold, camel clutch, and Boston crab. He demonstrates the holds without pushing them to a knockout or submission, then asks Cai to try out the holds on him. Cai performs them with the same restraint. However, with the figure-four choke, Cai is less disposed to hold back, instead, taking the opportunity to strip DeLeon down to his skivvies.
Thus begins the real fight in BB12, as niceties give way to tastier punishments like backbreakers and full nelson stretches. As night descends to blackness, the two grope and twist, while fireworks pop and flare in the distance. Ash and Cai give in to their natural desires, getting more turned on by the minute. In the end, they disappear (discreetly) into the darkness.
Whether by intent or accident, the two matches stand in contrast to each other - morning vs evening, comic vs serious, innocence vs experience. I prefer the second contest to the first - something about DeLeon and Li tussling in the dark excites my imagination. Night has that effect, arousing desire, blurring boundaries, making anything possible, almost certain.
