Daniel Garcia vs Brandon Thurston, Temperature Rising (Empire State Wrestling)
Thank you to RayAtL and a couple of others who urged me to check out this match after I posted my responses to a later Daniel Garcia match. This one is sharper and juicier because the stakes are higher - the ESW Heavyweight Championship. The 20-year-old (now 21) has such a handsome face that it's a joy to see it squinched up in rage and misery.
This is one of those pro matches I love, when two guys wear themselves down to the gristle in hopes of increasing the other guy's pain. Sweat and strike marks cover their bodies. There's a rapid series of assaults and submission holds, any one of which would be a finisher in other contests. Take that piledriver in the last GIF below - no, it ain't over yet!
Usually Brandon Thurston is nothing if not businesslike in the ring. The guy is not prone to express emotions. Garcia brings up the savage in the guy. The battle is full of raw emotion. The character arcs are contained in the squared circle and in the knowledge that a belt is at stake. Whether there is bad blood between these guys that predates this match is irrelevant. What matters is the sturm und drang these two men generate during these 37 minutes.
