Brendan Byers vs Kirk Donahue, Demolition 29 (BG East)
Here's a misery-fest that pits two jobbers-turned-heels against each other. It's the capstone of BG East's Demolition 29. Years ago, these guys were bait for up-and-coming heels. Now they are the up-and-coming heels, and leave it to BGE's perverse sense of fun to put them in the ring against each other. A smile flickers across Brendan Byers's face when he hears Kirk Donahue's name. He's heard of him. He's heard that Kirk's a top-notch jobber who is fun to beat up. Kirk admits he's lost a few matches - pointedly using the past tense. He doesn't say so, but it's clear he's pissed off at Brendan for assuming he's still a jobber. Byers sizes up Donahue, all but licking his teeth - Does he like the smooth muscle tone of Kirk's body? or is he counting the number of bones he's going to crack? Does it have to be either-or?
This is mostly Brendan's match, and he has a ball mussing Kirk up. Kirk is not defenseless by a long shot, but Brendan is bigger and clearly he's been waiting for a shot at Kirk and he's not going to waste a second of it. Kirk tries to keep his cool at first, let Brendan have his fun, be a good sport. But his patience wears thin fast. He's got agility on his side. He dodges one of Brendan's punches and springs up and into Brendan's face, both fists spinning like a Popeye cartoon. Then he drop-kicks Byers into the ropes. BB is stunned but operates well on muscle memory alone. He shortens Kirk's hope spot by a good 80 percent. Just when Brendan feels he's got Kirk down for the count, Kirk thrusts out, and the two go at it again, sweatier this time.
The idea of two babyface jobbers turning heel at approximately the same time offers plenty of narrative possibilities, all of them tasty. We get the best of both worlds - suffering and punishment - and the mix gives this contest its fire. Personally I root for both of them - not just for the roles they play, but for the consummate ring lords that they are.
