Jay White vs Will Ospreay, ROH/NJPW War of the Worlds 2017 (Ring of Honor)
12 May 2017, New York City. Three years ago today, White and Ospreay squared off in one of the legendary matches of professional wrestling, creating the quintessential bruiser versus high-flyer contest. (Last year the two faced off again, with an altogether different outcome.) The clash of styles is not solely responsible for this match's high repute. It's more a matter of each man being the best at his style as a result of insane discipline and commitment to wrestling spectacle.
The GIFs speak for themselves. The moves are sharp, sudden (sometimes arising out of nowhere), and (in the case of the second to last GIF below) speedy in their delivery of punishment. The reversals often come as genuine surprises (a long forgotten art in most of wrestling, particularly in the USA, where spots occur with the uniformity of Big Macs).
I'm a fan of both guys, but White has fascinated me since first I laid eyes on him as a youngster training and performing in France. In 2017, he had just arrived at the bulk (6'1", 220#) that put him in the bruiser class. He was at the tail end of his run with Ring of Honor, returning to New Japan Pro Wrestling at the end of the year and (so far) staying there, thankfully avoiding the clutches of McMahon and company. Would I like to see the guy live in action? Hell, yes, and I want to buy him breakfast, too.
