Don't Tell My Boyfriend

Mason Brooks vs Freddy Campbell, Wrestleshack 27 (BG East)

All three Wrestleshack 27  vignettes show vast improvements on the usual narrative style in wrestling entertainment. None more than the middle episode, featuring Mason Brooks and newcomer Freddy Campbell. Compared to anything else I've seen in underground wrestling, this is terrific storytelling - funny and sexy and smart. In it, an experienced wrestler and smooth-talker finds himself  paired with a neurotic new hire who is terrified his boyfriend will find out he's been to the BGE Wrestleshack. (And just wait till you find out who the boyfriend is!) The setup is a blend of 30s-style screwball comedy and 70s-style buddy movie, only with headlocks and penetration.

I've seen Mason Brooks' early work, but this is his best to date, which is saying something because his bouts with Kirk Donahue and Steve Mason are masterpieces of exhausting combat and affecting storylines. Did Mason script these himself? I have no idea. Whether he did or not, they all seem tailormade to suit his wry yet seductive devilishness. His cherry-breaker performance here, opposite innocence-personified Freddy Campbell is perfection.

  1. I really like Mason's match against Blaine Janus. They both look great. And Mason says, "Actually, I do want to play with your balls...."
