Vinny Vigo vs Tony Angeles, Babyface Brawl 5 (BG East)

I like wrestling promotions to pit new hires against each other, as opposed to pitting them against a company regular. Pitting a newcomer against a company regular usually signals that the newcomer will lose. I like surprises, and there are few things as conducive to surprise as pairing two new hires against each other. Both are unknowns, both are eager to make names for themselves, and both are determined to make names for themselves at the other guy's expense.

Admittedly, Vinny Vigo is already a familiar face many of us fans know from other venues. But BG East has its own vibe, and wrestlers new to the promotion are determined to impress us fans and the company bigwigs. Vinny is an especially charismatic figure. He spans the divide between "hot" and "endearing." He's a self-confident performer, always has been, even before he came to BGE. Tony Angeles has wrestled under the name Zed elsewhere. He looks like a perfect match for Vigo - jaw-droppingly handsome and built as sturdily as his first opponent at the promotion. He's an inch shorter than six-foot-tall Vigo, and 40 pounds lighter. The weight difference will surely factor into this match's outcome, but how it factors is unknown. As the photos above show, Vigo is quick to gain the upper hand.

We start with arm wrestling, which may offer clues as to how the main contest will play out. Two rounds tie Vinny and Tony; the third round breaks the tie. Each of the three rounds is close. I'm less into the mechanics of a wrestling match than the drama and sex appeal. I wouldn't kick either of these guys out of my bed. Having watched Vinny wrestle at other venues, I lean towards him, but Tony is a hunk of equal promise. I'm always a sucker for tall, dark, and handsome, and both these men meet that standard.

Most of the wrestling is down on the mat, which I generally prefer to bouncing off ring ropes. Horizontal is right for wrestling, in my opinion. As a grappler, Vinny takes an early lead. I love watching Vinny grapple. You can read his facial expressions as he calculates how best to get a firm hold on his opponent. I love the way he bares his teeth in a tight clench. He climbs all over Tony. Even when Tony reverses, my eyes remain on Vinny, yet Tony pleases with his roughneck resistance, used effectively for escapes and for taking the wind out of Vinny's sails.

  2. Why do these wrestlers leave one promotion and not go back. Do they get paid more at different promotions, it is creative differences, or just ego differences? I've always wondered.
