What we call pain is whatever we sense is pain. Each of us sees pain through different lenses. We decide for ourselves how much we can take. I'm not saying pain isn't a real experience. It is real. Some say that "feeling pain is in principle no different from undergoing other standard perceptual processes like seeing, hearing, touching, etc." Pain (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). To a certain degree, we tolerate pain like we tolerate bright light and loud noise. The limits of our comfort zone we more or less decide for ourselves.
