Tyrell Tomsen vs Cole Cassidy, Florida Fights 6: Reversal of Fortune (BG East)

The advantage of having a longstanding underground wrestling promotion is a roster swelling with seasoned talent like Cole Cassidy and Tyrell Tomsen, here in a kick-ass stand-alone confrontation on (I assume) their home turf in Florida. For years they've worked, earning respect and acclaim - BG East fans nominated Cole as best heel back in 2012, and Tyrell pulled a double-header the same year in Wrestle Revenge, flat-out one of the top ten BGE releases of all time.

Reports that comeuppance was central to Cassidy vs Tomsen drew me to this release. Nothing in professional wrestling is sweeter to me than payback, tit for tattoo. Both these guys have long histories of dirty fighting, so everything that happens to them here is something they've had coming to them for a very long time. Of the two, unquestionably Cole is the nastier. He underlines the point by sneaking up behind Tyrell, grabbing a jump rope from his hands, and strangling him with it. In other words, a move that in any other wrestling context might have been a desperate last-ditch strike for victory is, for Cassidy, the opening blitz.

Cole reigns for most of the 32-minute fight, even accounting for the give and take that makes up most of the match. In the ring he pushes Tyrell into a corner and pelts the muscular torso with a slow but steady roll of punches, taking advantage of the man's weakened state after close to a half-minute of oxygen deprivation. Tomsen's knees bend, and his ass slumps towards the mat, his elbows on the middle ropes for support. Cassidy slams his knee to the gut and then takes a running start to drive his shoulder to the same spot. All of this is standard procedure in pro wrestling. What distinguishes it here is Cole's unhurried pace. The chin-patched sicko wants to bask in Tomsen's winces and moans.

Tyrell is not so easily beaten. He lashes back, driving Cole backwards to the opposite turnbuckle for some heavy gut-bashing in retaliation. Tomsen fires his punches in rapid succession to maximize their crippling effect. These knuckles don't have time for Cassidy's winces and moans, and the villain topples, his face a rictus of shock and agony. Tyrell pulls him up by one arm and whips him to the opposite corner and then summarily drives him back down to the mat. All this in a minute, for Tomsen's rally is short-lived, cut off by Cassidy's forearm thrusting up to the man's scrotum.

The give and take continues, escalating by degrees, with the introduction of a foreign object (the jump rope again), waistband-pulling, full-force body slams, spine-cracking bear hugs (front and back, Tomsen being a master of both), head scissors (with illegal leverage on the ropes - guess who), and crucifixion full nelsons and stretches. The final five minutes is what fans will be paying for, however - sweet vengeance, served up with pitiless precision, as deadly, fast, and unannounced as a cattle-gun bolt to the back of the skull. Sweeet.
