Pretty in Pain 11: Paul Perris Edition

Johnny Lightning vs Paul Perris, Canadian Musclehunk Wrestling 3 (Can-Am)

To all aspiring underground wrestlers, here is the hard act you have to follow. One of the most reckless and unruly matches I have ever seen features Johnny Lightning (in the purple string) and Paul Perris (in yellow trunks). I suspect but can't be sure that this is Perris's Can-Am debut. It's a three-fall match, so Perris gets to show off his domination skills at least once, but this post is all about his suffering at the hands of Lightning, who holds nothing back and pounces on the Polish superman on all fours ... repeatedly.

Lightning's unbridled rage has never been more explosive than it is here directed against one of the most gorgeous and eccentric of all underground wrestlers ever. Perris's sells complete the masterpiece. His agonized face is a fine argument for the gorgeous theatricality of pain. Even when his face is buried in Johnny's muscles, the rest of his silky body shudders, collapses, writhes, and jolts as expressively as any dancer's. His dusky Eastern European physique becomes a canvas on which Johnny expresses his fury. For me, the action is doubly exciting because, unlike the skinny twinks that followed a few years later, nothing about Perris's body suggests weakness or ineptitude in self-defense. I find that it's Perris strength and knowledge of martial arts that make him the more compelling as a victim.
